Judge at Air India perjury trial urges jurors to resist researching Reyat

A B.C. Supreme Court judge repeatedly urged jurors at the high-profile perjury trial of Inderjit Singh Reyat to fight their instincts and resist the temptation to go on the Internet to research the case they have been asked to decide.

In brief opening remarks to the jury Tuesday, Mr. Justice Mark McEwan of the B.C. Supreme Court said doing research on the case would be “absolutely against your oath” and create a problem if the court finds out.

Fourth Suspect Held in Canadian Terrorism Probe

OTTAWA—Police here are continuing to hold a man described by a federal prosecutor as a fourth suspect in a widening Canadian terrorism probe.

The man, who was arrested Friday, hasn't been charged with terrorism-related offenses. Instead, he appeared in court Saturday on domestic-violence charges, was released on bail, then immediately rearrested and detained on a separate charge of uttering threats, according to his lawyer. He is expected to appear in court again Sunday morning.

New authority to regulate law firms, Centre tells HC

CHENNAI: The Centre on Thursday told the Madras high court that it has decided to introduce new norms and establish a regulatory authority to streamline the functioning of law firms in the country.

Senior advocate and additional solicitor-general of South India, M Ravindran, made this submission when a public interest petition seeking to restrain foreign law firms from operating in the country came up for hearing before a division bench comprising Justice Elipe Dharma Rao and Justice KK Sasidharan.

Chief justice of India rues falling standards of govt pleaders

Making his displeasure at the Centre’s interference in the nation’s justice delivery system public, chief justice of India (CJI) SH Kapadia said on Saturday ignoring section 24 of CrPC was affecting the quality of government pleaders. The section says the government must consult the judiciary in selecting prosecutors, who play a vital role in criminal dispensation.

“Why the power [to help appoint government pleaders] was taken away I don’t want to comment [on],” CJI said.

Tit for tat? BCCI wants recusal of Lalit Modi lawyer

The Lalit Modi case took a new turn on Sunday when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) asked one of his lawyers to recuse himself from the case. The BCCI demand was a sort of counter-attack on the Modi camp which has been insisting on the recusal of at least two of the three members— Arun Jaitley, Chirayu Amin — of the disciplinary committee.
