In an effort to draw attention to the plight of the survivors of the Bhopal gas tragedy, a major RTI campaign will be undertaken and at least a thousand applications will be filed in the next one week seeking information on the action taken by the government.

Thiruvananthapuram, April 26: Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan defended the provisions of contempt of court, saying without them judicial orders will become a bunch of papers and no executive officer will obey court verdicts.

RTI Applicability - Speaker disagrees with CJI’s views

Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today disagreed with Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan’s views that the Right the Information Act was not applicable to his office.
“I am not questioning the Chief Justice. He is a high constitutional functionary. But since you ask me, I feel we should not keep anything back from people,” he told reporters when asked about the CJI’s views.

Bar council to implement RTI Act

With a view to ensuring transparency in the functioning of the Punjab and Haryana Bar Council, the Right to Information (RTI) Act will soon be implemented in the council. This was stated by Dr Vijender Singh Ahlawat, newly elected vice-chairman of the council, while addressing a news conference here yesterday.

Apex court puts office of profit law under scanner

The Supreme Court Tuesday began probing the constitutional validity of the controversial changes in the law on office of profit which the Congress-led government brought about allegedly to shield 40-odd parliamentarians.

'The amendment in the Act was brought to protect 40 MPs from disqualification. The desire of bringing an amendment with retrospective effect raises an important question of propriety,' said senior counsel Harish Salve, opening his argument before a bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan.

approved Senator David Vitter's (R-LA) amendment to prevent Indian Health
Service funds from being used to pay for abortions.

Regulations for new commodity law in 10 days - official

The Forward Markets Commission (FMC), India's commodity markets regulator, will notify certain regulations of the recently amended commodity law in the next 10 days, a senior official with the regulator said.

"We will notify regulations relating to brokers and vigilance mechanism in 8-10 days," said B.C. Khatua, chairman, FMC told reporters on the sidelines of a press conference.
